Sarya Jamal

My name is  & I’m the founder, Artist & Designer of Pieces of Me (POM)
It is a brand of wooden hand painted furniture and home accessory designs.
POM was born May 2014 and alhamdullilah it has been a great year!

A little about me:
I am a pharmacist working for BupaArabia in Jeddah KSA. I have recently taken some time off to focus on widening my POM horizons. Painting has always been a hobby of mine. Ive been painting on canvas using both acrylic & oil paints on and off during my University years.

I studied Pharmacy at University of Medical Sciences & Technology in Khartoum Sudan and I am currently doing my masters via distant learning in Global Health Policy with London University of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.

I am a single mother to a 4 year old daughter and after coming out of my marriage when she was only 2 weeks old I spent most of my time painting. It was my way of communicating and clearing my head. My paintings are always dictated by my thoughts and emotions. I experimented with many materials and finally fell in love with wood. My new found hobby turned into one hell of an adventure. I named my brand “Pieces of Me” because it came from a very personal place.

May 2014 was my first exhibition in Jeddah at an Art Visionary Event in the prestigious Tashkeil Art Gallery. In June I was invited by the CEO & founder of Tashkeil Art Gallery to speak at a Bechance Event (an international creative platform for talent hunters) and present my first collection along with 10 other creatives. To my surprise, I was voted for by the audience & judges and went home as a winning speaker with a Bechance appreciation coin. My next exhibition was in July 2014 in Riyadh, KSA at an art, fashion & design Expo. One of my pieces won me “most creative designer” award during the designers competition. I continued painting to relief my work/life stress and later that year in November I had an exhibition in Bahrain at Al Riwaq Art Space. My pieces have been retailed at Maison Bom an International French department store and Dar Al Kanz – an elite interior design boutique in Riyadh, KSA. My work has been featured in Saudi Gazette, Arab News, Al Medinah & Okaz Newspapers during the past 9 months.
Feb & Mar 2015 I designed the chairs and tables for Buqshah Cafe in Riyadh and hand painted all 36 chairs and 11 tables. I am currently in the middle of a Ramadan Exhibition here in Jeddah while working on a few pieces to be exhibited in London this summer at Showroom Shoreditch & my work will remain with them for the duration of 3 months along with other international designers from July throughout to London Fashion Week. All my paintings are inspired by our vivid African culture that I am very proud of.
I still consider myself a start up with a very long way to go. The challenge is to balance between my work, my hobby and my priority that is my daughter!
