Hello my name is Nosa and I am the founder of A Backpack for Life! . I am a high school student at Des Moines Roosevelt High School and Central Academy located in Des Moines, Iowa USA. I am originally from Sudan and immigrated to the United States from Egypt. I was never able to attended school in Egypt and Sudan but always had a deep passion for education. Growing up with 7 other siblings who were all older than me but one made it quite difficult for any of us to attend school since my parents could not afford it. What began my passion for education was seeing around me that many young girls in my country fell to gender bias discrimination when it came to education or their parents could not afford to send them to school. Moving to America and being able to attend some of the top schools in the nation has inspired me to return to my roots and help eliminate barriers for young girls like myself in Sudan. Whether it be by writing a short book translated in Arabic to help parents understand the importance of sending their girls to school, providing school uniforms and supplies, or paying school entry fees, I was willing to take on that challenge. My biggest inspirations for this project has been my mom who is one of the smartest people I know-she never was able to fully complete school in Sudan but eventually finished in America-and Malala Yousafzai who has showed me that age doesn’t matter, any person can make a difference in this world as long as they have the passion and drive.
